Anxiety and Panic

What’s happening to me?

You’re busy, trying to get everything done, at work or home. Out of nowhere, they hit you.

Dizzy spells and breathing difficulties. An elephant decides to take a nap on your chest.

Something is very wrong.

“Am I having a heart attack? A stroke? Do I need to call 911?”

Your mind races as your world come to a grinding halt.

Thankfully, it passes, but…

Gradually, your symptoms go away, but not the memory of how you felt. What on earth was that?

You don’t want to go through that again, so you make an appointment with your primary care doctor.

You carefully describe every moment of “the incident,” hoping for some words of wisdom and reassurance.

The doctor listens patiently and says, “No need to worry. It’s just anxiety.”

Just Anxiety?

Well, ok. You’re not totally convinced, but maybe it was just a one-time thing. Perhaps you won’t ever feel that way again.

As you look back on it, you concede, “I was probably just really stressed out about something.”

A few days later, you’re “relaxing” in front of the TV at home. Without warning, they’re back – and this time, the elephant has a suitcase.

How is this just anxiety? And how can I stop this from happening?

Noticing Your Thoughts

Fear can be all-consuming and leave no room for rational thinking. Sometimes, fear takes over – and leads you to second-guess everything and question your next steps.

When you notice your thoughts without casting any judgments, you begin to regain control of your fear.

It’s like watching a river of all your worries and “what ifs” go roaring by, headed straight for the rapids.

If you fall into the rushing currents, your fears and worrisome thoughts may consume you.

However, if you find solid ground away from the edge and watch those worries go by without letting them sweep you away, you decrease their intensity and become the master of your thoughts.

And fear? It no longer threatens you.

Anxiety is your overprotective friend.

It’s natural to have some anxiety. It’s part of your body’s self-preservation system. Like a cautious and caring buddy, it looks out for you – it has your back.

But it becomes problematic when it cares for you too much – to make you question everything.

Once you can assure your overzealous pal that there’s no real danger, fear and intense anxiety will gradually disappear!
